The dirty little secret of a lot of "scientific" research (including in the social sciences): "corrective factors", tweaking the data based on limited evidence to universalize and make the data work for your purposes. Most of us--even those trained in analyzing quantitative data--would never catch some of those seemingly insignificant adjustments.
