Former Sen. Bob Kerrey roiled political waters today when he announced he has changed his mind and will run for the U.S. Senate seat.
Twenty-one days ago, after weeks of reflection and a whirlwind media tour de Nebraska, Kerrey decided against a run, saying familial considerations came first. But today he reversed course abruptly, releasing the following statement:
Doing things the conventional way has never been my strong suit. This afternoon, I will file to become a candidate for the United States Senate in Nebraska. I came to realize that my previous decision was the easy one, not the right one. My commitment to serve Nebraska and America, and to be part of the debate about the challenges we face was too strong to dismiss. My family supports this decision 100%. I look forward to seeing you in the coming weeks. We have a lot of work to do.
And with that, Nebraska became a battleground state once again as Democrats struggle to hold onto control of the Senate in the November elections. Before Kerrey joined the race, the Nebraska seat was considered a lock for Republicans.
Now this is going to be fun to watch here in Nebraska. It may even change the dynamics of the Republican race.
I suspect that the GOP race will get nastier, and weaknesses of one candidate or the other will no longer just be whispered about, but will actually be screamed.
