Friday morning, our family leaves on it’s annual adventure. Which means that I’ve got a lot of things to do in the next two days—and for some reason, I’ve managed to get two meetings scheduled (one on each day) which will require me to do some driving… What was I thinking?
Tomorrow I pick up the rental van, get packing lists together, and (I suppose) go to the grocery store to stock up on non-perishable foodstuffs that we’re taking along (we’ve got a rental house in our final location). I also need to make sure that I’ve got a list of instructions together for the college student who is housesitting/petsitting for us—and give her a walkaround tour of the house tomorrow night.
Thursday, while my husband and kids try to pack, mow, and finish cleaning up the house so that it’s tolerably clean (since we’ve got someone else staying here…), I have a meeting in Omaha. Should be home by 8 p.m.—just enough time to finish packing and hopefully get to bed at a semi-decent hour. We plan on hitting the road by 7 a.m. (We plan on doing that, so that maybe we’ll actually leave by 8).
I’ll post some photos from our trip—maybe even some video—I’ve got my Flip Video camera charged and ready to go. It’s amazing the quality you can get on a relatively inexpensive digital camcorder. I’ve also got my handy-dandy Droid phone, so I can e-mail photos to folks pretty easily.
I won’t be totally “off the grid”—although will probably be “mostly” off the grid. The house where we’re staying does have a computer—and a wireless network. But I’m going to try and limit myself significantly. I figure if I check e-mail twice a day, I’d be doing pretty well, and could keep the notes from overwhelming me.
In a sign of just how “wired” we are, I’m spending my time tonight trying to gather up all of the cords and cables that I might need for the trip—iPod charger, phone charger, netbook electrical adapter, chargers for cameras, chargers for eBook Readers…
We may play a little game come Friday. I think I may have mentioned, some months ago, where we were going, but we’ll see if those who weren’t paying attention can guess with some of the clues and photos that I give you. A hint: we actually have two destinations—one after one day of driving; the final destination at the end of the second day. One of the destinations is embedded in this video:
MY FELLOW AMERICANS is actually one of my favorite political movies ever—two great actors with great comedic timing.
