I'm not sure how "harmonious" this combination would be, but Robert Novak is reporting that Karl Rove is trying to promote a "harmony ticket" for the GOP consisting of John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Karl Rove and other prominent Republicans are talking up a McCain-Romney harmony ticket despite personal dislike between the two presidential candidates. Romney also would have to overcome opposition to him going on the ticket by his closest advisers.
Other than the fact that Romney and McCain appear to despise each other, I'm sure that would work out fine.
Seriously, though, while I can understand the political appeal of the two (Romney has a somewhat better understanding of the economy, and made inroads with the social conservatives), I'm not sure if this is a good idea. While some might suggest that it is akin to Reagan and Bush mending fences and becoming the ticket in 1980, Ronald Reagan was much more secure with who he was than I think McCain is--McCain is cocky, but I'm not sure that translates into being a pincipled leader. Romney, likewise, has not been in a subordinate position for many years (while George Bush spent a career leading departments, but still having to report to the President), and playing second banana to John McCain might be difficult.
From a purely political point of view, given the Obama juggernaut, I'm not sure that being number 2 on a McCain ticket does much for Romney.
If I were Romney, I'd stay out of it (in spite of the temptation of being that close to the seat of power). Let McCain lose (I suspect he will, absent something unexpected happening), and then go out and do what I'm hoping that Ron Paul and his people will do: start campaigning for candidates and help build up the party so that you have more people who "owe" you the next time around.
