Enhanced Interrogation
Just to make it quick and easy, here's a link to Andrew Sullivan which links to some articles discussing the concept of "Enhanced Interrogation" (discussed at the last GOP debate, John McCain and Ron Paul were the only two who really came out against this). It's certainly easy to make up drastic scenarios where the fate of millions rest on the ability to get information from a captive--but as John McCain and others have said in different contexts over the years, when you are being tortured, you tend to tell your captors what they want to hear--not necessarily good information.
It's hard to say what any of us would do in a desperate situation, but as a point of principle, we should always be against torture--even if reality doesn't always jibe with the ideal. To publically say that you would consider "mild torture" opens the door for behavior beyond that. I hope that Republican presidential candidates will stop and think about what they're saying instead of beating their chests in some sort of macho display.
